White Noise Machines That Block City Noise Without Looping or Clicking
White Noise Machines That Block City Noise Without Looping or Clicking
The Problem: City Noise + Fake “Fan Sounds”
For years I slept above a 24-hour bus line. Earplugs helped — like these tested ones — but I needed something to smooth out the background. Something that didn’t sound fake, loop every 30 seconds, or click in the middle of the night.
I cycled through apps, box fans, travel gadgets. Half were too quiet. The rest were too sharp, too mechanical, or just weirdly shaped.
What I needed was real broad-spectrum noise — something that masked voices, engines, and random thuds without sounding like static or digital ocean.
What Finally Worked
After testing a handful of machines side-by-side, here’s what I stuck with:
- LectroFan Classic — My top pick for consistent, high-fidelity white noise. No fan blades, no air movement, no loop — just real broadband sound.
- Snooz White Noise Machine — Uses a real spinning fan in a tuned enclosure. Smoother, more “natural” hum. Best for those who find digital too harsh.
- Yogasleep Dohm Classic — Old-school and still solid. Great if you like that gentle low-pitch rumble, but not as loud as newer models.
What I Use (and When)
- Deep masking at home: LectroFan
- Comfort hum in bedrooms / kids’ rooms: Snooz
- Small rooms or budget setups: Dohm Classic
For travel, I also pack a lightweight sound playlist with wireless sleep earbuds that stay in.
Tips That Helped
- Don’t crank it to max. You want to smooth, not blast. Medium volume is best for masking.
- Position matters. Place it between you and the noise source — windows, doors, etc.
- Avoid anything that loops. You’ll hear the repeat at 2:00 a.m. and it will drive you crazy.
